But recently, India's own mobile operating system has been developed by IIT Madras under the Make in India initiative. This OS is called BharOS, which is an OS specially developed for mobile devices.

BharOS - Locally developed?

BharOS is developed by JandK Operations Private Limited (JandKops), a company built by iIT Madras. .It uses the mobile OS Android Open Source Project (AOSP) as its base layer, which means that even though the India-based company has worked on BharOS, it is not entirely manufactured in the country.

Can you update BharOS on your phone?

Although BharOS is based on Android (AOSP) first, you cannot install this new OS update on devices that already have Android OS. Google has been offering its Play Store ecosystem through phone partners for years and BharOS will need a similar system setup to expand its reach among mobile users in India. The folks at jandKops are looking to team up with government agencies and private industry to update BharOS on more devices.

This Android 13 Go Edition OS has started working on 250 million budget smartphones worldwide. It will be updated a lot in terms of notification permissions, app language preferences.
